Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Closet Audit?

During a closet audit, a Stylist will help you sort through your wardrobe by category (professional, night out, celebration, etc.) and work with you to decide what to keep, what to toss, and what to update (with tailoring, mending, etc). The Stylist will take the items you've eliminated to consignment or charity and any items that need updating to be tailored, cleaned, or mended. In a typical appointment, we can evaluate roughly 30-40 garments per hour. If you're a waffler or take a bit longer to try things on, that number may vary. Closet Audits start at 2 hours.

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of our free, no-obligation 30-minute Stylist Introduction. Get to know a Stylist before booking your first appointment!

What is Closet Shopping?

A Stylist will help you create fresh and flattering looks from the clothes in your closet, and take pictures of each look so you can remember what to wear and when. A Stylist works with you to maximize the investment you've already made in your wardrobe by helping to rethink your garments. As needed, your Stylist will create a shopping list to turn your "orphan" garments into complete outfits, and fill in the functional gaps in your wardrobe. In a typical appointment, we can evaluate roughly 30-40 garments per hour. If you're a waffler or take a bit longer to try things on, that number may vary. Closet Shopping appointments start at 2 hours.

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of our free, no-obligation 30-minute Stylist Introduction. Get to know a Stylist before booking your first appointment!

What is Personal Shopping?

During a personal shopping session, the Stylist will either accompany you on a shopping trip or go shopping for you. If you choose to shop with your Stylist, he/she will help you maximize your budget by deciding where to spend and where to save, add key pieces to fill in your wardrobe, and find great new looks for any occasion. If your Stylist shops for you, he or she will bring the purchases to your home or office and return what doesn't work. Plan for one hour per needed item, though you'll often get more. Personal Shopping appointments start at 2 hours.

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of our free, no-obligation 30-minute Stylist Introduction. Get to know a Stylist before booking your first appointment!

What is the National Stylist Workshop?

Our two-day workshop, designed by Stacy London, and facilitated by Stacy, celebrity guest speakers and industry experts, is open to stylists from around the country. The workshop sets the standard for the personal styling industry, is ever-evolving as the product of an ongoing conversation with our participants, and is recognized by the trade and consumers across the country. This is an interactive environment, further enhanced by small group sessions to provide the opportunity to showcase each stylist's capabilities and receive constructive peer and trainer feedback.

Stylists will leave the workshop with new friends, refined skills, and the opportunity to be selected for the Style for Hire network.

Upon completion, participants are evaluated and considered for Style for Hire certification. Selected Stylists will be able to access all the network has to offer. A subset of talented stylists will be invited to join as Apprentices. Apprentices will receive a custom development plan, and can shadow network stylists and assist on projects in order to gain full Stylist status. Once Style for Hire and the Apprentice's Regional Manager deems him/her ready, the Apprentice can start accepting client appointments on a probationary basis through our website.

What do I get for the cost of the National Stylist Workshop?

The Workshop was designed and is delivered by Stacy London and other subject-matter experts. Stylists get two full days of highly interactive styling modules, hands-on challenges and trainer and peer feedback. Post-workshop, all participants receive a comprehensive Reference Guide and a Certificate of Completion, and a subset will be invited to join Style for Hire.

Breakfasts, lunches, mid-afternoon snacks, and a cocktail party at the end of the second day are provided.

What is covered at the workshop?

The Science of Styling (Day 1) practices body type assessment, silhouette-selection, color theory, and articulation of your choices to the client. We also spend time on tailoring, the economics of the wardrobe and cost-per-wear / amortization.

The Art of Style (Day 2) applies the Science from Day 1 and reviews mixing color, print, texture and shine to create outfits with depth and style.

Throughout the workshop, stylists participate in module-relevant styling challenges using real "client" volunteers, and get feedback from peers, trainers and Stacy.

Who can attend?

Style for Hire Workshops are geared toward personal stylists - people with paid in-home styling experience - looking for ongoing professional development. However, we also encourage people with substantial experience in related fields (personal shopping, retail, fashion design, tailoring, etc), or those making a career change, to join us. The workshop focuses on our unique, body-centric approach, and is challenging regardless of background. We do have invite-only regional programs around the country for the most senior stylists (2+ years of full-time styling experience). For more information, please contact stylists@styleforhire.com.

Please note, all attendees must be 21 years of age or older.

I'm already a personal stylist - why should I attend?

If you're like most of us, you're something of a lone wolf; you haven't had much opportunity to get advice and feedback from your peers who may have come to the trade by a very different path. Style for Hire started with a tremendous amount of styling knowledge from Stacy, and we've accumulated a great deal more from the hundreds of stylists who have participated in our sessions. The Workshops are challenge-based and interactive and tons of fun.

And if that's not enough, participating in the Workshop offers the chance to be selected to join Style for Hire!

Do you have plans to hold workshops in other cities?

We are based in NYC, and - for the time being - intend to continue hosting Workshops here to integrate its thriving fashion community.

We do have invite-only regional programs around the country for the most senior stylists (2+ years of full-time styling experience). For more information, please contact stylists@styleforhire.com.

What are some of the benefits of being a Style for Hire Stylist?

First and foremost, you join a network of your peers! In what is typically a lone-wolf industry, we connect stylists around the country so they can socialize, exchange tips, share stories, and participate actively in this vibrant organization.

Style for Hire supports stylists by educating the public about personal styling; offering national and local media exposure; sourcing clients - both personal and corporate; creating relevant retailer and services partnerships that provide commissions, discounts and VIP services; and building technology tools to allow our stylists to do their jobs more efficiently. You get the power of a national company - Human Resources, accounting, technology - yet you retain total independence. You can set your own rates, hours and manage your appointments at www.styleforhire.com with our Stylist Dashboard tool. We send you a 1099 at the end of the year with all your Style for Hire appointments.

What do you look for in a Style for Hire Stylist?

As it is virtually impossible for us to observe stylists in real-world styling appointments, we use a variety of inputs to help inform our decisions. These include: stylists' submitted materials (resume, cover letter, website, portfolio, before/after photos...), Workshop group facilitator recommendations, staff interactions / observations, interviews, and peer feedback.

During our two-day Workshop, Stylists interested in becoming part of the Style for Hire network will be evaluated in the following areas:
  • Styling competence: the ability to identify a body type and to choose the most flattering silhouette to balance that body. Your eye for how color, print, texture, shine work together to create interest and depth in an outfit. Your personal style.
  • Experience: the knowledge you have from doing closet work and personal shopping; and familiarity with your local resources.
  • Client Skills: self-confidence, warmth, open-mindedness, tact, and flexibility. Your ability to articulate the rationale behind your styling choices to your clients.
  • Attitude, enthusiasm, and organizational 'fit'.

What is the Personal Styling Tactics Seminar?

Designed by Stacy London and taught by Master Stylists, our personal styling workshop will teach you how to conduct effective closet audit, closet shop, and personal shopping appointments with your clients. You'll learn industry best practices and get tips on how to handle even the most sensitive client situations, with the help of client simulations and trainer, peer and client feedback.

What is the Editorial Styling Seminar?

An essential workshop to develop your styling skills for runway and photo shoots, designed by Stacy London and taught by editorial experts. The focus is on styling for session work, including insider tricks and techniques.

Where is the Workshop venue?

TBD. The Manhattan-based venue will be announced along with the next workshop dates.

How should I find lodging?

We strongly encourage the use of travel or hotel websites to seek out accommodations that meet your requirements. Style for Hire may be able to negotiate discounts at the venue or nearby hotel - details will be released along with venue.

I have additional questions.
